Infant cognitive development games

And as parents , we should assist them in their learning phase by providing the right environment and stimulation activities. In my previous post on Feed IQ, I have written about the importance of cognitive milestones in infant cognition. I am sharing the activities as per my experience which I used to do with Nemit. The first 3 months are quite tiring for a mom, with continuous breastfeeding , cleaning, changing and no proper sleep and rest in between.

If you are not happy, it will show up in your behavior. And believe me, these little babies can sense our stress or the stressful environment around them. The stress is not good even for your little ones, I hope you know that! Take proper nutrition and include foods rich in DHA and natural Vitamin E in your diet as these are considered as brain-boosting nutrients for the baby.

But then what we moms do at that time? We feed them, caress them, talk to them in the cutest possible voice, clean them, rush to them on hearing their first squeak. Watch this video of Nemit responding to our talks when he was 2-months-old! The first months, babies communicate their needs by making different sounds i.

This is the most important time to bond with your baby and understand his needs better. The best stimulation you can provide is through touch. When you breastfeed your baby, he gets the warmth and comfort. When you attend to his cries and give him attention, he feels safe and secure. Talk to your baby in a soft loving tone, he will love listening to you although he may be looking somewhere else his attention will be on your voice only.

This is the best time to prepare a visual stimulatory environment and introduce sound-producing toys. You can give rattle toys, they will love to hold a rattle and shake it. And be ready to witness their cute toothless smiles while hearing the rattle create different sounds. One of the favorite toys of all babies is play gym. My son rolled over for the first time while trying to grab a toy hanging on the play gym. Tummy time is another activity which helps them work on their neck muscles and strengthening their core.

Talking and singing are one of the best ways to bond with your baby. Make faces and use different sounds to see how curious they get. Once your baby is halfway through his first year of life, it will be time for more exploration and more movement.

Your baby will experience many physical, mental and emotional changes. Make a big announcement out of it. Bring the tube closer and whisper a few words. Use beautiful, positive words as another secret. If the baby looks confused, let them see you mouthing the words. Make tapping motions on a table to see how well your child can follow your actions.

Begin with an action that your child already performs like banging the table. Then, add a different activity such as clapping, waving, or making kissing sounds while opening and closing your eyes and mouth. Start slowly so your baby will not feel frustrated.

This is a conversation between your child and yourself through actions that aid in the physical development of gross and fine motor skills. As physical development continues, motor skills develop. Fostering these skills alongside other developmental activities is a more holistic approach. Gather a few stackable plastic cups. Measuring cups will do as long as they are safe for children. Stack them, and then push them until the cups topple.

This is an excellent cause-and-effect activity. You can add listening and vocabulary by adding a story or rhyme to the stacking activity. Reading to your baby is the best way to foster the habit. New words and colorful pictures stimulate the brain.

Start by cutting the different letters of the alphabet from brightly colored paper. Hide these letters around the house and encourage your child to find them all. Guiding your child through their day by introducing objects, toys, and activities encourages the development of language skills. Play-dates are beneficial to parents and infants. They provide an opportunity for parents to receive emotional and social support while interacting with their peers.

If your child will be attending infant daycare in the future, arranging a visit to an excellent infant daycare facility can ease them into their new routine, too. Your baby learns about his big world through even the tiniest of experiences—from a simple cuddle to organized play.

Helping him feel secure and engaged has been shown to increase mental aptitude. In the first few months, your baby might show his cognitive abilities by simply turning toward bright colors, lights, or a human voice. As his memory and attention span increase over the months ahead, the knowledge he has gained will start to be applied through activity like using his hands and mouth to explore, finding hidden objects, and imitating familiar actions.

Providing such interaction is a labor of love that will reward you both. In the first month, begin by reading almost anything aloud to your baby. At 3 months, move to brightly colored picture books that show common objects.

In later months, create your own book with pictures of familiar people or things. His attention span might only be a few minutes but reading every day will pay off over time. Doing the same things over and over with your baby provides practice that helps him learn.

As your baby matures, you can make a game out of repeating actions or words.
